Screen Actors Guild
SAG (pronounced "sag," never S.A.G.) is the union for professional film actors in the United States. It also represents actors on the majority of primetime network dramas and comedies.

American Federation of Television and Radio Actors
AFTRA has long represented actors on daytime dramas (soap operas) and other TV shows shot on videotape, while SAG has claimed jurisdiction over filmed programs. With the advent of digital video and the fallout from recent labor actions, AFTRA has made significant inroads into the primetime schedule as well.

AEA (often referred to simply as "Equity," but not affiliated with the U.K. actor's union of that name) is the union representing theater actors and stage managers in the United States.

Casting Networks
Casting Networks encompasses separate sites for Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Miami casting notices. LA Casting is used by the majority of commercial casting directors and talent agents in Southern California. Free services include directories of talent agents, managers, casting directors, photographers, and acting schools. You can also browse (but not submit on) casting notices. With a paid subscription, you can post headshots and resume information and submit yourself for roles.

Breakdown Services
Breakdown Services includes two sites of interest to actors. Free registration at Actors Access enables you to create an online profile including two headshots, as well as browsing casting notices. There is a small fee for submitting to casting notices, unless you have a paid subscription to Showfax. On Showfax, you can download sides (parts of scripts used for audition purposes) for many film and TV projects. Downloads are free with a paid subscription; otherwise there is a small charge for each one. Breakdown Services is used by the majority of professional film and TV casting directors and agents.

Now Casting
A free Now Casting account enables you to upload a complete profile including six headshots and video that you can then link to at [yourname].nowcasting.com. A paid account enables you to submit on a wide variety of casting notices.

Central Casting
Central Casting has long been L.A.'s foremost casting agency for extras (also known as background artists or atmosphere) and opened a New York office a few years back. Note that they do not cast speaking roles.
